You need to be able to receive your emails on time. One of the main problems that spam can do to your email server is to clog it up with hundreds and even thousands of useless email. Now this can be a problem when your server and your host can no longer handle the capacity, either allocated to you based on the plan that you signed up on or based on its memory limitations. When this happens, either the systems jams up or their self-security functions within the service trigger and shuts down your email server.
